Senator Kedlaire Augustin, a member of the U.S.-backed totalitarian regime currently in power in Haiti, was detained on Thursday and then released during a police operation against a kidnapping syndicate operating in Port-au-Prince.
According to multiple reports, police had been searching for a vehicle described as an, “official’s” Silver Toyota Prado with tinted windows, without a license plate. This vehicle was said by victims and witnesses to have been involved in 9 kidnappings throughout the metropolitan region.
On Thursday, police intercepted a vehicle fitting that description and found Senator Augustin and another man, who hasn’t been identified, in the vehicle. The vehicle was darkly tinted and had, inside, heavy firearms and tactical equipment according to reports. They were also traveling without a license plate.
The Tet Kale senator was taken to the police sub-station at Delmas 33 but was ultimately released shortly thereafter. Anonymous voices from with the police institution say law enforcement officials were under extreme pressure by the regime to release Augustin. Augustin also has parliamentary immunity which should have prevented his detainment in the first place.
Augustin took to the press late Thursday and into Friday not addressing the allegations but instead making claims that he was beaten and brutalized by the police while handcuffed.
The U.S.-backed Tet Kale regime has been tied directly to numerous cases of kidnapping for ransom in recent years. Augustin was brought into power during the 2016 elections that election officials deemed wrought with violence and ballot-box stuffing by the Haitian Tet Kale Party (PHTK) which took the presidency and both houses of parliament in that year.
In January, Jovenel Moïse, who leads the regime declared the Parliament defunct but lawmakers like Augustin, who should still be in office, continue to enjoy pay and privileges for Senators. Augustin currently serves as a chief advisor to Moïse.
Haitians and Haitian-Americans have called on the U.S. to suspend diplomatic relations with Haiti in order to give the country’s leaders a chance to resolve a political crisis.
